Square Games

Square Games is a generative system in dialogue with early computer art — specifically Herbert W. Franke’s Quadrate (1970). Released as a 384-edition generative drop on fxhash.

A recursive algorithm stacks squares within squares, producing strict grids that read as machinic while the fractal-like structures that emerge feel organic. The system then intervenes against its own regularity: elements are offset from their grid positions, some squares are filled as solid blocks, and others are rendered in the background colour — appearing to erase parts of the drawing. The 16 active palettes were selected from 20,000 candidates for their capacity to induce chromostereopsis, an optical illusion in which strongly contrasting colours generate apparent depth and shimmering surfaces.
