Matrix Glitz

Matrix Glitz is a light-based installation that makes an electronic display shimmer like an iridescent surface. By placing modulated grid structures in front of LED matrices, Matrix Glitz intervenes at the physical surface of the panels: even though the shown patterns use only white, viewers see multicoloured gradients and a luminous depth that shift with the viewer’s position. These effects are not part of the programme driving the animation — they emerge from the encounter between multiple digital and analogue conditions.

In this sculptural version, four panels are combined into one surface. Because each panel is overlaid with a differently modulated grid, the optical interferences differ from panel to panel, creating a cut-up, abstract impression. It was first exhibited at the 14th Conference on Computation, Communication, Aesthetics & X (xCoAx), in Palazzo Madama, Torino, 2026.

The work is accompanied by a published paper that, drawing on arguments by Galloway and Cramer, investigates digital/analogue entanglement and claims the work produces an aesthetic of that entanglement.
